Lighting a button on an extension for VM at another extension

It would be nice to be able to have a button on an extension to monitor if there is VM in another mailbox.
On of our hosted competitors can do it and I have a customer that was able to see VM in a general mailbox on all of the phones. Now we can't do that and it's causing a problem.
IMO this should have been addressed many years ago. It's hard to tell someone Yes, our competitor can do it, but we can't. We're in danger of losing an account because this problem.
